Retail inventory and commerce link
A hypothetical small fashion label that sells from one physical store and a simple online shop, with sizes and colours that multiply the number of items to track.
This is a hypothetical business and a proposed system. It is not a client project and no results are claimed.
The problem
Stock is tracked in a spreadsheet that is updated after the day ends. An item can sell online while the last piece has already left the shop.
Purchase records from suppliers are kept as photos of bills, so nobody can say what a batch really cost or which styles are slow movers.
The proposed solution
One product and stock record that both the store billing screen and the online shop read from. Purchases are entered against supplier bills and create stock, so cost and quantity stay together.
Reports show stock by size and colour, slow movers and reorder candidates. Returns are logged against the original sale with a reason.
The workflow, before and after
How it works today (hypothetical)
- Step 1: Supplier bill photographed and saved on a phone
- Step 2: Stock typed into a spreadsheet at the end of the day
- Step 3: Online shop quantity updated by hand
- Step 4: Returns remembered rather than recorded
- Step 5: Reordering decided by gut feel
How the concept would work
- Step 1: Purchase entered once against the supplier bill
- Step 2: Stock created automatically with cost attached
- Step 3: Store and online shop share one quantity
- Step 4: Returns logged with a reason code
- Step 5: Slow-mover and reorder report available on demand
Features we would propose
- Product variants by size and colour
- Purchase entry linked to stock and cost
- Shared stock between store billing and online catalogue
- Returns and exchange log
- Stock ageing and reorder report
- GST-ready invoice fields, to be confirmed with the business's accountant
Technology
- Next.js and TypeScript
- PostgreSQL (for example via Supabase)
- Payment gateway integration as a potential add-on
- Courier and shipping aggregator integration as a potential target, depending on API access
Results
No results are claimed for this project. It is a concept, so there are no measured outcomes to report.
