Concept projectSteel and scrap

Steel and scrap job-work tracker

A hypothetical steel trading and scrap business that receives material, sends some of it out for job work, and sells by weight to repeat buyers on credit.

This is a hypothetical business and a proposed system. It is not a client project and no results are claimed.

The problem

Weighbridge slips, job-work challans and buyer ledgers are on paper. Matching what went out for processing with what came back is done from memory and phone calls.

Party balances are disputed because nobody can quickly show the slips behind a number.

The proposed solution

A record of every inward and outward movement with weight, grade and party. Job-work lots are tracked from dispatch to return, with the difference between sent and received shown as a visible variance.

Each party has a ledger that links back to the slips behind each figure, which makes statements easier to explain.

The workflow, before and after

How it works today (hypothetical)

  1. Step 1: Weighbridge slip filed in a folder
  2. Step 2: Challan written by hand for job work
  3. Step 3: Returned material compared from memory
  4. Step 4: Party balance worked out in a notebook
  5. Step 5: Disputes settled by searching old slips

How the concept would work

  1. Step 1: Weight and grade entered once at the gate
  2. Step 2: Job-work lot tracked from dispatch to return
  3. Step 3: Variance between sent and received flagged
  4. Step 4: Party ledger built from the recorded slips
  5. Step 5: Statement shows the entries behind each balance

Features we would propose

  • Inward and outward weight entries with grade
  • Job-work lots with sent versus received variance
  • Party-wise ledger and ageing
  • Attachment of slip photos to entries
  • Stock by grade and location
  • Permission levels for gate staff, accounts and owner

Technology

  • Next.js and TypeScript
  • PostgreSQL (for example via Supabase)
  • Export to spreadsheet formats for the accountant
  • Accounting software integration as a potential target, subject to API availability

Results

No results are claimed for this project. It is a concept, so there are no measured outcomes to report.
